My name is Matthew Turner and I’m a Strategic Marketer. When i think about it, I’ve been one for a long time, but it’s so hard to come out and admit.
I spent my childhood asking questions, and arranging things in a very specific order, and generally being a rather strategic little marketer.
I wanted to be savvy and creative, I really did, but I just couldn’t shake the feeling of who I really was. So very recently I decided to leave my job and take the risky, terrifying, and quite possibly insane decision to be my own man.
So there you have it, I’m a Strategic Marketer who will offer my services for money…and guess what? I couldn’t be happier!
What Is a Strategic Marketer?
The very word, Strategic Marketer, sounds so very boring. It kind of sounds like the marketing equivalent of an accountant or tax man. However, I intend to change this, although I do believe the modern world will do this without my help.
My decision was made much easier when I really thought about the current market place. I meet so many marketing consultants, and although I like many of them, I find the whole process old fashioned. It usually follows a process like this:
- Hi, I’m a Marketing Consultant
- Your Business needs Twitter/Social Media/PR/Magazine Adverts etc
- I can Help
We have a guru for everything, but quite frankly these pre determined ideas DO NOT work!
I understand marketing as a whole and I’ve spent a great deal of time learning this. I have a good overview of all types of communication, platforms, and general theories; and do you want to know the one thing I’ve discovered?
There’s no perfect solution and everyone is different.
What The Future Holds
The only way you will know if Twitter works or not is to do the groundwork. I recently had a meeting with my cousin who own his own business, and he began asking about Twitter. I told him,
“I think Twitter might work for you”
The two keywords in this little sentence are ‘Think’ and ‘Might’.
Quite frankly this isn’t good enough and it’s exactly what I told him. Why would you pay someone to offer ‘maybe’s’? No, a consultant should be giving certainties – or as close as you can get – but you can’t do this without the groundwork.
Where Do I fit In?
That is where I found my opening, because I feel the whole industry is living in the 20th Century still. I, on the other hand, wish to embrace the 21st Century and this is how I do it:
- Creativity + Strategy = 21st Century Success
- Go To The Beginning
- Engage Engage Engage
- 21st Century Thinking
Earlier I said I was a Strategic Marketer, but the truth is I’m a new breed. I’m not on my own, but I am part of the minority. The key to this new breed is the balance of Creative & Strategic Thinking.
