Everyone has a book in them. That’s what they say, but so few achieve it. And those that do, well, they hardly become a millionaire. I keep hearing that 80% of self-published authors sell less than 100 copies.
This is a long way from that magic million mark.
How do you do it? How can you become the next Amanda Hocking, or dare I say, Fifty Shades of Grey?
Confucious once said, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”.
Consider this post your first step. This is where your million seller begins.
It Begins With A Vision
If you have read How To Build an Author House, you’ll know I talk about Vision, Mission & Core Values. Today I want you to focus on your Vision, and only your vision.
Martin Luther King once said, ” I have a dream” (last obvious quote, I promise)
So let me ask you this…what is your dream?
Is it to sell a million copies?
To appear in the New York Bestsellers list?
To win a Nobel Prize?
To die before your time and be remembered throughout the ages?
We all do things for a reason. The reason I write is different to you. My dreams differ, and therefore my Vision differs, too. But If you want to survive in a world of a million authors, you need to have a Vision.
What A Vision Offers
Above all, a Vision gives you purpose. When you have doubt, exhaustion, depression…your Vision offers a way forward. It’s like a shining light through the darkest of days.
It also gives you something to strive for. Would you like to know my Vision?
“I want to create stories that a make a difference. Stories that inspire, innovate & provoke. The world is forever changing and I wish to leave my mark”
This isn’t only my Vision for writing, but my Entrepreneur life as a whole. It doesn’t focus on money or a particular list. These are by products of my overall dream. If I achieve my Vision, other good things will follow.
Your Vision will be different. It might be more vague or more specific. It can be anything you want it to be. It doesn’t need numbers or a timeframe. It can if you choose, but it does’t have to.
Your Vision is whatever you want it to be
Did you know I have a Facebook Page dedicated to my writing? I’m inviting fellow writers & readers to LIKE my page and join the fun. If you do so in July you’ll be entered into a Free Prize Draw where one lucky winner will receive a $20 Amazon Voucher & a 1-Hour Consultancy Chat with ME!
It’s not about the prize, though, it’s about engagement. I’ll be using my Facebook Page to document my writing, showcase samples and designs, and create competitions and polls to get your feedback. Doesn’t that sound fun?
All you have to do is Press Like.
How This Will Help Sell One Million Copies
Confession number two: I’m afraid it won’t. It doesn’t guarantee anything, although having one, I believe, certainly helps.
The best example I can offer is the mindset of an Entrepreneur. I speak to these individuals often, and do you know what most of them share? Obsession!
An old boss of mine once promised himself a brand new Rolex watch. Guess what, he got one. He worked, refined, and did what he had to do. He became obsessed by the journey, but he got there in the end.
Being a writer is no different. Create your Vision, decide what you really, truly want to achieve, and keep going until it happens. If it’s to sell a million copies, great, if it’s to appear on a list, or sign for a particular publisher, or meet a certain person, that’s fine, too.
Your Vision is whatever you want it to be
Will You Take This First Step?
Many of you will have a Vision. Many will not. I encourage you to create one, and if you do have one, how’s that going?
One thing I find is people start with great intentions. They create a Vision, a plan, a structure to work toward. But then, as the months tick by, it goes out of the window.
Are you still the person from the beginning?
If not, why not? Why have things changed?
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. What’s your Vision and how is it helping you in your writing. Share your thoughts below
