Turndog’s Monthly Income Report (June 2015)

In the beginning of 2014, I decided to do something rather scary… BE TRANSPARENT & HONEST. I want to be an open book, but I’m scared. WHY? Because I’m still at the beginning of my journey, and the numbers are pitiful, and the failures often and obvious.

Below are the numbers, the finances, the projects, my health, and stats from June 2015. This is a snapshot of what it’s like to be a self published author. A new entrepreneur. An average guy still finding his way. It isn’t designed to scare, nor glorify, merely provide the truth of right now. For all my other Monthly Income Reports, Click Here.

WRITING:

Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, I love to tap away at the keyboard and share my words with those willing to read. However, standing out from the ever growing list of book is tough, so let’s dive into my published books, the amount of copies sold, and the kind of income a crazy pen scratcher like myself earns:

Well, it’s been a rather interesting month, which, on the surface, looks somewhat grim. As you scroll down you’ll notice I’m not as well off as I have been in recent months, but it’s been a catch-up month for the most part, and it’s allowed me to focus more on my writing – The Successful Mistake and I Unlove You.

More on this soon, but I think it’s important to lay these cards on the table.

So… how about those book downloads? Not great, as you can see for yourself. I must now (and I do keep saying this) start promoting these freebies through the mean of campaigns and adverts and things of such suchness. I’ve done nothing but allowed the Amazon Gods to dictate who does and doesn’t see these books.

Not good, and the time has come to change this as summer sets into full swing. I’ve now removed the worry of making money from these books (for now), but that doesn’t mean I can sit back and relax. The whole point is to encourage more people to join this ride with me, and that only happens if they discover me.

Oh yes, I need to whip my butt into gear!

???…

CURRENT PROJECTS:

I’ve placed most of my focus on The Successful Mistake and I Unlove You in June (especially I Unlove You, where I’ve just about finished and edited the first draft).

It’s a strange one, because as I look back I don’t feel like I’ve achieved much. However, I’ve achieved more writing this month (or editing, as often is the case) than I have in a long time. With a few client projects coming to an end, it’s meant I’ve been able to focus more attention on these wee books.

For The Successful Mistake, I’m just about done with Stage Two and ready to jump into Stage Three. More important, I’m finding a swing and pattern to my writing, and a decent amount of flow. There’s still a long way to go, but the rest of the first draft should happen rather smoothly.

I Unlove You is now at a stage where I can involve a developmental editor, and so a new journey begins where I split my time between fine edits and the early inceptions of a launch plan (Cover Design, Formatting, Marketing, etc…). July should play an importune role in this book’s lifespan, as it’s hard to tell where you are until an outsider takes a peek. My to-be editor will do more than take a peek, and I should soon have a clear idea of when I can launch I Unlove You rather soon.

And back to The Successful Mistake… well, I continue to split my time between writing and building exposure, and I’m glad tho have done my first webinar, planned and scheduled a few more, and started to release some Guest Posts. Again, a long way to go with much to do, but I believe I’ve set some important balls in motion this month.

Now I have to publish these bad boys and continue my writing adventure…

Literally nothing to say or add here. I would like to get rid of all my paperback and hardcovers this summer (to sell or giveaway, I do not know), and generally improve the amount of downloads these books get. It’s nice to take away the pressure of sales, but when you don’t have a paid gig (as I haven’t this month), it shows how imperative passive income is.

I just hope this rather crazy plan of giving everything away pays off for me at some point.

SPEAKING:

I’ve decided 2015 is the year I kick my speaking/workshop career into gear, and as such I’ve created four topics to build a portfolio around:

  • YOUR STORY MATTERS, DAMN IT! (aimed at colleges)
  • CREATE CUSTOMER LOYALTY & BANISH COMPETITORS THROUGH BRAND STORYTELLING (aimed at businesses)
  • THE SECRET BEHIND THE MODERN CREATIVE, ARTIST & CHANGEMAKER (aimed at colleges)
  • THE LOCAL AUTHOR WHO NEVER USED TO READ OR WRITE (aimed at primary schools)

Focus for the rest of the year is to refine these topics, gain kick-ass testimonials, and generate momentum ahead of 2015:

THE BEHIND THE SCENES:

I had a great morning at Brighouse High this month, and although it wasn’t a paid gig, it was enjoyable. I need to start looking at my speaking again soon and placing a few irons in the fire for the next academic year. Time has flown of late, and I cannot believe we’re closer to beginning a new school year.

I’ve taken my foot off the speaking gas in recent months, but I need to gather some steam once again.

I also partnered with Contactually on a webinar this month, and I had a blast. With several more scheduled, and hopefully lots on the horizon, this isn’t just a good way to build my mailing list and overall authority, but great practice for speaking in general.

A webinar, much like speaking on stage, is about confidence and conviction. I’m confident these two worlds will align and help me in several ways further down the line.

Again, nothing to add here. With summer now in swing, I’m not sure if I’ll get any paid gigs anytime soon. I do need to set some ideas in motion for the next year, and generally do more speaking again. I’m still finding that fine work-life balance, and for the most part I don’t think I’m doing a great job.

A time to reflect and kick myself up the butt, me thinks…

I may be a writer, but that doesn’t define my whole world. I also help businesses Discover, Create & Share their story, and I’m constantly meeting and greeting local businesses. Seeing a big fat zero pains me, but I suppose this is the case (at least for now) as I straddle between projects.

It’s a killer that certainly hurts cash flow, and like I say, shows how important passive income is. But I have a few irons in the fire which I now need to ignite and turn into something fruitful. Oh yes, it’s that time when I must set up meetings and make shit happen!

It’s been nice to work more on my own projects though, and to overall get back on track. But I do miss having a project to dig my teeth into, so I need to ensure July is a month I start something new.

As for a project I did start a few months ago, that truly has gone on the back burner for the foreseeable future. It’s a huge shame, but it’s one of those things. I may talk about it in more detail soon…

**The above Facebook stats consider a combined friend/follower count for the profile**

Overall, traffic and general website stats are decent, and one thing I’ve noticed in recent months is how my Google Traffic is beginning to plateau. In many ways this is  bad, as it shows SEO isn’t growing. However, it’s also nice to know all the kinks are worked out, and we’re back to normal after I switched to a new site.

One glaring worry is that a lot of my traffic seems to come from a few ‘spam’ sites. I noticed it a while ago but thought it might be fine, but it’s an issue that isn’t going away. As such, I’m looking to block these smarmy little sites, and I think I’ve found a way to do so.

On the plus side, my site’s not been hacked or anything bad like that. It’s something that purely taints analytics, because they visit your site for 1 second. As such, it builds quantity but lowers quality. Not good!

Everything else is ticking along, which isn’t good now, is it? I need to be in a state of growth, but easier said than done. I’ve tired lots of things in the past, but I’m hoping my upcoming Guest Posts will help send new people to the site, improve email sign up (more on this next), and create a few positive spikes here-and-there.

In other words, I need to keep on plugging on – and rocking and growing and reaching for the stars.

It also provides comprehensive reports which the above info is captured from. There’s many providers to choose from (and I’ve tried most of them), but these guys rock![/su_box]

I have some happy news in terms of email, because it seems my unsubscription rates are levelling off. This means that (for the most part) I’ve cleansed my lists from those who don’t like my daily emails. This is good news indeed, as those who remain are hopefully in this for the long term.

My open and click rates have also levelled off (although continue to drop slightly), and although 17% isn’t terrible, it isn’t good, either.

I haven’t committed to my daily email experiment yet, but I need to decide what I’m doing for the latter parts of the year. I may end up cutting back a little, but then again, I do enjoy my short and sweet messages. Overall, I’m on the fence.

What do you think? Should I continue to send daily emails, or cut back???

And my Contactually Webinar added a decent chunk of new subscribers, and after a few days of people unsubscribing (again, something I expected), things levelled off. I’m optimistic these webinars (and Guest Posts) will give my mailing list the kick up the butt it needs.

A long way to go, but I think this part of my world is heading in the right direction – although ever so slightly.

It seems I worked a great deal less this month, but the above doesn’t take into account a solid two days (and roughly 10-12 hours) of reading through I Unlove You and making notes. I printed it out, actually spending the best part of two days without my laptop.

It was marvellous and very strange indeed. Not sure how to feel about it, to be honest.

So… yes… It’s been a rather different kind of working these last few weeks, with a lot of focus turning towards I Unlove You’s first/second draft. It’s just about done and dusted now, so I can jump back into the full swing of a more well-balanced workload.

As you can imagine, the amount of writing (as in the actual word count) is hard to track, so the above numbers are guesstimates. However accurate they are, the point is this: it’s been a solid month of fiction.

It has meant other areas have slipped by the wayside, and looking at these numbers helps me see I need to focus more time in July on gathering new clients and meeting more people (dare I say, spend more time on email, too).

Well I never… I didn’t think the time would come I didn’t spend email enough of it on email.

I’ve certainly fallen off the wagon in recent months, but I feel like I’m heading back in the right direction(ish).

I need to shed a few more pounds, but for the most part it’s about eating healthier. Summer aids in this plan, because I always eat less when the sun shines, and when I do eat, I tend to eat better. Here’s hoping Yorkshire has a prolonged and awesome summertime!

I’m walking more (at least it feels like), and eager to wake up and hit the day. But I’m still not happy, and I want to rock my health back to the top of my game by the time my birthday comes around in September.

I’m definitely hoping July remains sunny, because so far my diets seems far better than it was April and May…

After a few good months of money making and getting back on track, I’ve certainly taken a step back. I suppose it’s to be expected at the moment, as I straddle between projects. The key is to build passive income, a study project flow, and ensure smaller projects occur to fill the time of purgatory.

It hurts to take a step back like this, but the key is to regroup and make sure this doesn’t become a regular occurrence.

With ideas and possibilities in the pipeline, it isn’t all doom and gloom. Another month or two like this, though… well, we’ll be back to square one, won’t we.

SO, THE PLAN FOR JULY:

Right, let’s end with a few mini objectives to help keep the eye on the prize throughout June:

  1. HIRE AN EDITOR FOR I UNLOVE YOU
  2. ADD A NEW CHAPTER PARTNER TO THE SUCCESSFUL MISTAKE
  3. START WORKING WITH A NEW CLIENT
  4. CREATE A BOOK MARKETING PLAN – BOTH ONLINE & OFFLINE – FOR AUGUST-DECEMBER
  5. SCHEDULE AT LEAST 3 SPEAKING GIGS (ONLINE & OFFLINE)

Overall, I don’t know what to think about June. It’s been a strange month, and I believe I’ve been rather wayward and lazy at times. I need to right this wrong for July, and create a more well-balanced workload (sorting out a few areas I’ve let slip me by).

With I Unlove You now almost ready for external eyes, it’s important I find, hire, and begin work with a developmental editor. I must also split my time between editing and starting the launch plan, but my top priority has to be connecting with a superstar editor.

I also need to keep the ball rolling with The Successful Mistake, and a new chapter partner will certainly help fill the coffers after a down month. I’ve one or two in the pipeline, so need to convert at least one of these.

And I miss having a client. I think I’m back on track with my own projects, so again, I need to convert one or two of these irons in the fire. VERY VERY important!

Finally, I must plan my Book Marketing and Speaking, because these are two areas I’ve let slip. I cannot put it off any longer, so the time has come to rock these aspects of my working world.

Like I say… a strange month, and one I’m unsure to feel about. I want to make July count. I’m ready and raring 🙂

And finally, I’ve set myself three 2015 Goals (This Post explains all), which EVERYTHING I do over the next twelve months works towards. These are what they are, and this is what I’ve done to stride closer towards these this month:

  1. IN NOVEMBER, GO ABROAD WITH KID TURNDOG FOR THE FIRST TIME & WEIGH 11 STONE THE DAY OF OUR FLIGHT = Definitely a bad month for money, and far from a great one in terms of health/weight. Still, I’ve managed to get on top of my finances, so I’m confident this trip will happen
  2. BUY & SHARE A COFFEE WITH 25 PEOPLE WHO APPEAR IN THE SUCCESSFUL MISTAKE = Again, nothing achieved here, but I have a few events in the pipeline. I’m not sure if I’ll hit 25, but I’m determined to connect and share coffee with as many folk as possible.
  3. REACH 100,000 PEOPLE THROUGH MY STORIES & WORDS = Overall, a decent month here. Lots more to come, with further webinars and guest posts in the pipeline.

And there you go, folks. Another Monthly Income Report at an end. I know these reports are long, but I hope they help you in some way (if only for pure entertainment/laughing at me purposes). These Monthly Income Reports are hard to write, but I find them rather therapeutic, too. Thank you for reading, and please get in touch and let me know your thoughts. I’d love to start a convo on TWITTER or FACEBOOK.

Speak soon,

TURNDOG
